Awareness Day Presentations

Colleen Casey
On Wednesday, April 6 Xaverian students attended Leadership themed Awareness Day presentations. Speakers included Lisa Keohane, P ’16, ’17, Mike Weber and Jon Thomas ’98.

Keohane spoke to students in Grades 7 & 8 about their digital footprint. Currently a full-time instructional technologist at Babson College, Keohane is a leader in advocating online safety. She has more than five year’s experience as a student advocate, mentor and trainer working with students, parents, educators and administration to raise awareness about cyber bullying. She stressed the importance of how to use technology and social media smartly.

Mike Weber founded Southwestern Consulting's Leadership Institute with a focus on helping people to build the skills and attitudes needed to excel in today's dynamic world. For the past 20 years, Mike has been inspiring people from Maine to California to explore leadership, teamwork, and organizational structure by reorganizing the patterns and assumptions that define how they do business and work together. Weber’s energetic presentation included student participation, and a lot of laughter. Weber’s incorporation of humor, stories, and the creative use of props to drove home messages about the power of change and the value in breaking the unwritten rules to our students.

Thomas, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, and founded Tap Cancer Out, a 501c3 nonprofit which raises awareness and funds for cancer-fighting organizations through BJJ. Since 2011, Tap Cancer Out's unique blend of philanthropy and martial arts has raised over $200,000 in the fight to find a cure, including a $100,000 gift to St. Baldrick’s in 2014. Jon will spoke to the junior class about his journey of creating Tap Cancer Out and how they might someday lead and create social change.
