The Passing of Brother Bede Benn, C.F.X.

Brother Bede Benn, C.F.X., a beloved former teacher and administrator at Xaverian in the 1960’s, passed away at the age of 95 on May 10.

As long as he was able, he attended class reunions where former students enjoyed sharing Bede stories of their high school days. He had a tremendous influence on his students, faculty and his brothers in community.

“The oldest living Xaverian Brother, Brother Bede’s life as a man totally devoted to God was an inspiration to me and so many Xaverian Brothers,” said Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. “He will always be a special part of our school legacy as well as one of the legends in our congregation.”

John Daly ’70, a former student of Brother Bede, reflected on the impact he had. “When I arrived at Xaverian in 1966, I was an awkward kid, apprehensive of my new surroundings. Brother Bede was one of the first people who made me feel that I belonged, and might even have something valuable to contribute,” he said.  “Many people underestimated Brother Bede -- and the kids were pretty merciless in mocking his speech.  But he had obviously learned to let that sort of thing pass over him like water.  And beneath his jovial manner was great depth, of both character and intellect.  I have had many fine teachers, through college and graduate school, but I still think of Brother Bede as one of the finest educators I have ever known, combining the ability to explain the substance with the ability to inspire kids to learn.  More important, his was one of the kindest and most caring human beings I have ever known.I will always remember -- the the greatest fondness and respect -- our dear ‘Bwuddah Bede’.”

May he forever rest in God’s peace.
