Academic Placement

Academic Placement

Xaverian has three levels for most freshman courses:

Honors-most advanced

Accelerated

College Preparatory

The levels differ primarily by the prerequisite skills and expectations as well as the pace of instruction. There is a core of knowledge that all students must master regardless of level. However, the curricula are designed so that honors and accelerated course content has an increased depth beyond the core content. Please click here to see all the courses offered by Xaverian.

The placement of incoming freshmen is based on:

  • Entrance exam results
  • Placement exam results (Mathematics and Modern Language)
  • Middle School transcript

Mid-year changes in placement are rare, but may occur if a student demonstrates exceptional academic achievement in a course and is recommended by the current teacher. The Guidance Counselor would then contact the student’s parents before making a final recommendation to the Assistant Principal for Academics- Grades 9 & 10.

At the end of each academic year, a student’s placement is reviewed, the current teacher will recommend the student’s placement for the following year. Prerequisites for courses and levels may be found in the course catalog.
