Mr. Jonathan Kelly, Chairperson
Goals:
Within the context of a Christian, college-preparatory education, the Social Studies Department strives to aid in the development of knowledgeable and thoughtful persons who are active citizens of a democratic society and the world community.
Objectives:
1. To emphasize the dignity and importance of the individual and to demonstrate on a human level a concern and interest in those with whom we work.
2. To offer a knowledgeable appreciation of the interdependence and interrelatedness of the world community economically, politically, and culturally. This appreciationincludes and understanding of cultural variations, historical and social science concepts, and an insight into the moral and physical needs of all people.
3. To foster an understanding of how historical events influence the development of the political, economic and cultural institutions of the United States and the world.
4. To provide instruction in those skills basic to cognitive persons, including the ability to judge between opposing views, the ability to participate in problem-solving and the ordering of priorities. These abilities demand the more fundamental skills of reading, writing, and analyzing.
5. To provide instruction in the use of the tools of historical research, including primary documents, written and oral records, and technology.
6. To consider, when possible, the Christian morality and values of past and current events and issues.
