World-Renowned A Capella Director on Campus

Dr. Jamie Hillman from Gordon College recently worked with Xaverian’s own X-Men

This past week, Xaverian students had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Jamie Hillman, Assistant Professor of Music and Conductor of the Men’s Choir and College Choir at Gordon College. He visited campus on Monday afternoon for a workshop with Xaverian’s a capella group, The X-Men. “We were honored to have Dr. Hillman visit us,” said Dr. Robert Thorp, Xaverian’s Director of Bands. “He is a world-renowned a capella choral director and our boys greatly benefited from his expertise.”

Dr. Hillman is a multi-talented music professional. As a tenor soloist he has recently performed major works by Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schütz, and R. Nathaniel Dett with choruses and orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia. His choral compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, and North America by a number of ensembles.

After warmups, he worked specifically with the singers, giving them insights and helpful suggestions for their personal practice, group rehearsal, and future performances. “Dr. Hillman asked me questions and gave me feedback about my singing,” said Joseph Cucinotta ’22. “It was good to know that someone from such a high level would be willing to come talk to students in high school.”
