XAVERIAN SOPHOMORES TO THE RESCUE

Jimbo Allen ’23 and Bart Glancy ’23 rushed to help a couple in danger, later saying "It's just the right thing to do."

James “Jimbo” Allen ’23 and Bartholomew “Bart” Glancy ’23 found themselves the heroes in a rescue story earlier in November, right down to their moment of fame on the news, WFXT Boston 25. The two Xaverian sophomores were at the Allen’s house in Dover with another local friend when they heard yelling coming from across the Charles River. In a thoughtful divide-and-conquer effort, Jimbo and his friend hopped in their kayaks in search of the stranded man and woman, while Bart stayed connected to them on the shore via cell phone. They found the lost pair in a marsh across the river. The two said that their phones had died and it had gotten dark quickly. They were lost and ended up trapped on a bog in the cold water for hours. Jimbo and his friend paddled them back to shore and were greeted by local police and rescue who provided treatment to the man and woman, offering them blankets and checking them for hypothermia. “When we found them, they had shaky voices, but they were very thankful. They just wanted to get out of there,” says Jimbo.

Bart noted in an interview with Boston 25 that at first they weren’t sure if the people they heard yelling were really in trouble or if it was a joke. But once they asked them to call the police for help, he and his friends knew they had to spring into action. When the rescue crews arrived on the scene, Bart was there to greet them, update them, and serve as a go-between with Jimbo over the phone. Their quick thinking paid off and the pair was rescued without issue, preventing what could have been a tragic situation.

When asked what prompted them to bravely head out in search of the couple, Jimbo said, “We want to be considerate of others. It’s just the right thing to do.”
