The Class of 1973 Reconnects at 50th Reunion

The Class of 1973 reunited for a weekend of 50th Reunion events.

The weather was perfect as the Class of 1973 reunited on Thursday, May 11 and Friday, May 12 for their 50th Reunion events. They kicked off their celebration on Thursday evening with a class-run event at Lewis' in Norwood. Organized by Peter Weiss ’73 (with assistance from Andy Colamaria ’73 and Rich Hagerty ’73), the “Night Before” event was a time for members of the Class of 1973 to reunite and recall many stories from their days at Xaverian. Tom Cavanaugh ’73 even provided a cake which sported the unofficial mantra for the Class of 1973, “When the Hawks Go Marching In.”

The following night, members of the Class of 1973 were treated to the Xaverian-sponsored 50th Reunion event which was held at the school. The evening began with a Mass in the Josephine M. Noble Chapel (named after the mother of Paul Noble ’73 who was in attendance). The Mass was celebrated by Fr. John Currie (Pastor of the Dorchester Catholic Collaborative Parishes), with music provided by two young alumni of Xaverian - John Roper ’20 (currently a student at Assumption University) and Sam Stearns ’20 (currently a student at Tufts University).

After Mass, members of the Class of 1973 enjoyed a beautiful cocktail hour before sitting down for a catered dinner. During dinner, Hon. Jim Menno ’73 offered a deeply moving speech about what being a part of the Class of 1973 meant to him and called his class to recognize that “we are and will always be ‘brothers for life.’” Following Judge Menno, current Xaverian student Jesse Peck ’24 offered his insights into what being a Xaverian student today means to him. To conclude the speaking program, Head of School Dr. Jacob Conca ’94 took the time to remind the Class of 1973 of just how special a class they were then and today - citing lived examples of members of the class gathering to support one another at wakes and funerals and during the tougher life moments. “You always come together,” remarked Dr. Conca. “The Class of 1973 has - and continues to be - more than a class, to be a ‘band of brothers who work together to support and edify one another’” (citing the Fundamental Principles of the Xaverian Brothers).

The evening culminated with the Class of 1973 gathering for their official class photo in the beautifully appointed Ryken Courtyard (formerly the courtyard of the Brothers’ Residence) in front of the statue of St. Francis Xavier, patron saint of the Xaverian Brothers.

Amidst the cheerful banter and smiles from both events, the Class of 1973 offered a reminder to all of our alumni classes - to be genuine, support one another, and always be “brothers for life.”
