Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. ’70 Honored at
Xaverian Brothers High School Gala on March 18; $630,000 Raised for Financial Aid

On Saturday, March 18, 2017, Assistant Principal Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. '70 was presented with the prestigious Xaverian Medal, the highest honor the school can bestow, at the school’s 21st annual gala. It was announced that a scholarship had been created bearing his name, with an initial anonymous gift of $50,000. The school’s varsity stadium press box will also be named in Brother Ray’s honor.

Though a milestone event for Brother Ray, this year’s gala was also a milestone event for the school, with it becoming the single largest fundraising event to date in Xaverian’s 54-year history. The event raised more than $630,000 for the school’s financial aid program.

“Our celebration tonight provides an opportunity for me to express my gratitude to all of you for your support,” explained Headmaster Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. in his opening remarks. “Your presence tonight, all 750+ of you, is an affirmation and great tribute to Brother Raymond. His ministry among us for twenty-three years is especially inspiring and deserving of our gratitude. Your presence is a great support to Brother Ray, as he takes another road.”

“To say that receiving the Xaverian Medal is an honor is an incredible understatement,” said Brother Ray. “Since I was 13, my life has been shaped and molded by the Xaverian Brothers. Ever since I became a teacher, I always had the deep-seated desire to return to my alma mater. I always wanted to give back to Xaverian Brothers High School what it had given me.”

Brother Ray holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theology from Boston College, as well as a Master of English Degree from Boston College. He grew up in Roslindale and now resides in Westwood. He began his educational ministry in 1975 at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Brother Raymond served as an English and French teacher as well as the head cross-country coach and student council moderator.

Beginning in 1981, Brother Raymond began nine years of service at Xavier High School in Middletown, CT. In a life devoted to service, Brother Raymond has also held positions as Principal of Holy Trinity School in Orangeburg, South Carolina and Principal of Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky.

Serving as the event co-chairs this year were Rick and Cathy Roche of Westwood (parents of a 2011 graduate), John (Class of 1970) and Denise Murphy of Wellesley (parents of a 2003 graduate), Brad and Barbara Caron of Hingham (parents of a current sophomore at Xaverian) and Michael (Class of 1980) and Monica Connolly of Milton (parents of a current freshman at Xaverian).  This year’s gala raised $630,000 and directly benefits the school’s Scholarship Fund.
