Xaverian Brothers High School is proud to announce that senior Hariharan Shanmugam ’17 was named a semi-finalist in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Competition.

Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

A Hopkinton native, Shamnmugam currently serves as Xaverian’s National Honor Society President, captain of the Speech and Debate team and the Community Outreach Director for the Young Men for Change Club.

Xaverian has been instrumental in my academic and personal growth,” said Shanmugam. “The support and care I receive from my teachers and from my peers has allowed me to put forth my best effort and make the most of all the opportunities I've been given; at Xaverian, I've found an environment that's enabled me to enjoy learning for learning's sake.”

Shanmugam is one of 16,000 semifinalists that have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $33 million.

“Harry is a dedicated intellectual who consistently shines both inside and outside the classroom," said Principal Jacob Conca '94, Ph.D. "He is highly respected by his peers and the Xaverian Faculty.  We could not be happier for Harry, he is a dedicated academician, a wonderful young man who is most deserving of being recognized as a National Merit Semi-Finalist.”
