The Road to Worlds

Xaverian’s Robotics Team competes for the first time at the FIRST FTC World Championships.

On March 9, Xaverian’s robotics team, Hawk Robotics—The Ryken Force were named Massachusetts FIRST FTC State Robotics Champions. In the opening round-robin matches of the state championships, the team finished undefeated against a field of 32 of the state’s best teams. Combining the undefeated record with overall points, The Ryken Force advanced to the playoff rounds as the second overall seed. As captain of the second alliance, the team again went undefeated, winning each of the best of three semi-final and final rounds 2-0.

This win not only made The Ryken Force state champions, it also qualified them as one of the four teams to represent the commonwealth at the FIRST FTC World Championship tournament in Houston, TX.

After weeks of preparation, on April 17, the Hawks joined 243 other FTC championship-winning teams from around the globe to compete on the world stage. During the competition, The Ryken Force was paired with teams from Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Texas, Montreal, Canada, the Netherlands, and Libya.

In match-play, the Hawks played consistently and performed solidly, always contributing to the teams’ score, playing as well or better than they did at the Massachusetts State Championships. In some matches, they were the scoring leader for its alliance.

Despite their solid game play, the competition was tough. The team competed in some close matches, and earned one solid victory. However, after two days of “round-robin” match play, the team did not make the playoffs. The eventual winners of the tournament were from Romania, with alliance mates from California and South Africa. While it was disappointing to not move on after all of their hard work, the team considers this to be an amazing learning experience.

Congratulations to all members of Hawk Robotics—The Ryken Force. With such a successful run this year, the team is looking forward to next year's competitions and already planning how to conduct training sessions for newly interested Hawks in the spring.
