Fine & Performing Arts

Whether it’s art, design, music, public speaking, or theater, the arts are one area of the Xaverian experience where young men surprise themselves and those around them as they discover new talents.
Whatever form of artistic expression you want to try, you’ll have the whole community supporting you. We offer a wide array of avenues for students to express themselves: studio art, music, theater, architectural drawing and construction, guitar, piano, jazz band, film studies, digital photography, and more. If stand-up comedy is your thing, we’ll find a place for that (just not in class).

The arts are not only a confidence builder for a young man, but art can strengthen every facet of a Xaverian education. Participation in the arts can help students improve academic performance, help them grow socially and emotionally, think more critically, and be more innovative and collaborative. Art helps to build a wide range of higher-order thinking skills, the skills required for effective leadership. At Xaverian, every student participates in arts education as they learn that an appreciation for the arts is an important component of being strong young men. In addition, extracurricular opportunities abound. Check out the list below to see some of your options.

List of 3 items.

  • Music

Music is a universal language. Students at Xaverian have the opportunity to experience the joy of music through performance. They gain lifelong skills as well as self-confidence from working with others. We challenge our students to perform, create, and respond to music with excellence while making connections with their peers. In addition to the many courses offered, from Beginning Piano and Music Appreciation to Chorus IV, there's plenty to help our students hit the right note after the close of school bell:
    • Chorus
    • Jazz Band
    • X-Men A Capella Group
    • Liturgical Music Ensemble
    • Xaverian Players
    • LIVE@theX
    • Tri-M Music Honor Society
Additionally, through Xaverian's private music lesson program, students in grades 7-12 can study with some of the top teachers and musicians in the Boston-area, right here at Xaverian.
  • Theater

Xaverian’s theater program includes two productions a season, one musical and one straight play. The productions rehearse Monday thru Friday, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Opportunities for students range from actor to costume assistant to makeup designer to light board operator. The theater program welcomes students in grades 7-12 and encourages female students from surrounding schools to take part in our productions! Actors commit, roughly, two months of time to a production, while technical positions commit about three weeks of time to a production. In addition to the productions, high school students have the opportunity to take part in the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild’s METG Contest Day, where students in grades 9-11 perform scenes and students in grade 12 perform two contrasting monologues.

Recent shows have included: Death of a Salesman, Something Rotten!, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, and Newsies!

The following are theater, film, and media courses offered at Xaverian:

Additionally, students interested in filmmaking and/or screenwriting create silent films, movie trailers, movie scripts, television scripts, and animated short scripts!

    New York City Trip
Theater and visual art students take a yearly trip to New York City to explore museums, see a Broadway show, take in the sights and sounds of the city, and take part in a workshop with a Broadway performer!

In addition to theater classes, students can audition for the:
    • Fall Production
    • Spring Production

Through the arts, students are given a channel to express their visual intelligence and creativity. The works of art they create connect to their personal and social lives in meaningful ways. Xaverian offers a broad variety of art classes for all interests and aptitudes, including AP Studio Art, 3-D Design and Sculpture, and Architectural Drawing and Construction. In addition to all of the tools and supplies available in the Art Center, students benefit from access to phenomenal resources in Xaverian’s X-Ploration Center, where 3D printing, laser engraving, and a full machine shop are available throughout the year. All art students have their work featured in the fall and spring art shows at Xaverian. Don’t know how to draw or paint? Don’t let that stop you! Students of all levels are welcome in the Art Center and encouraged to get involved.
