A New Era of Athletics Begins at Xaverian

Comprehensive department enhancements position student athletes for success in competition, the classroom, and college.

Xaverian has announced a reorganization of its athletic department designed to strengthen student wellness, athletic performance, game day experience, and college recruitment support while building upon the school's longstanding tradition of athletic excellence.

The reorganization reflects Xaverian's continued commitment to evolving alongside the needs of its students. In recent years, the school has introduced the X-Ploration Center, expanded its fine and performing arts program, launched two award winning Hawk Robotics teams, and continued to grow opportunities through clubs, activities, campus ministry, and academic support. The enhancements to the athletic department represent the next step in that ongoing commitment to providing every student with opportunities to discover, develop, and share his unique gifts and talents.

Under the new structure, Director of Athletics Ted Currle, P '32, will lead the formation and development of coaches and student athletes, continuing to foster an athletic culture rooted in the Xaverian mission, character, servant leadership, and competitive excellence. The department has been restructured to better align with the evolving needs of today's student athletes through the addition of one new assistant athletic director position and clearly defined areas of responsibility for the department's three assistant athletic directors. Together, this leadership team will provide more focused support in athletic performance, athletic operations, and college placement.

"Athletics have always been an important part of the Xaverian experience, but today's student athletes require more comprehensive support than ever before," said Currle. "This reorganization allows us to better serve every student while remaining true to our mission of developing young men of character. We are excited to begin the 2026-2027 school year with a leadership team that will provide more intentional support for our students, coaches, and families."

Joe Lorincz '01 Returns to Lead Athletic Performance

After spending the past 11 seasons in the NHL as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the New Jersey Devils, alumnus Joe Lorincz '01 returns to Xaverian as Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance.

Drawing upon his experience working with elite athletes, Lorincz will expand Xaverian's comprehensive strength and conditioning program by designing training plans that help all teams and students safely develop strength, mobility, speed, and overall athletic performance. His work will extend beyond the weight room, educating students on nutrition, recovery, flexibility, sleep, injury prevention, and the mental approach necessary for peak performance. Working closely with the school's athletic trainers, nurses, and physical education department, he will help ensure every student has the resources and guidance needed to perform at his best.

Colin Kiley '12 to Elevate the Student Athlete and Game Day Experience

Having served as an integral member of the Xaverian athletic department for the past three years, Colin Kiley '12 has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Game Day Operations.

Kiley will oversee initiatives that enhance the student athlete, fan, and game day experience. He will lead the expansion of Xaverian's intramural athletics program while elevating the atmosphere surrounding Hawks athletics through enhanced game day production, student broadcasting opportunities, livestreams, theme games, and fan engagement. In collaboration with the Office of Strategic Communications, the Office of Student Life, and other campus partners, Kiley's work will help foster the pride, sportsmanship, and school spirit that have long defined Xaverian athletics.

Steve Steinbergher to Lead College Placement Program

Long-time Xaverian counselor, Mr. Steve Steinbergher, has been names Assistant Athletic Director for College Placement. As a valued member of the counseling team with extensive college placement experience and as an accomplished varsity coach, his unique skillset and expertise make him a great fit for the role.

Last year's graduating class saw more than 30 students (15.2%) continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, more than double the national average. Building on that success, Steinbergher will oversee Xaverian's comprehensive college placement program, providing student athletes and their families with guidance throughout the recruiting process while educating students on sport specific recruiting timelines and NCAA expectations, strengthening relationships with college coaches, and coordinating recruitment efforts across the school's varsity programs.

Principal Dr. Michael Nicholson, P ’29, said the reorganization reflects Xaverian's broader commitment to continuously strengthening every aspect of the student experience.

"Just as we've invested in academics, the arts, robotics, campus ministry, and student life, we remain committed to strengthening every aspect of a Xaverian education," Nicholson said. "These enhancements reflect our belief that athletics should do more than develop strong competitors. They should help young men build confidence, resilience, leadership, and lifelong habits of health and wellness while preparing them for success long after their playing days are over."

Currle said the department's new structure is ultimately about ensuring every student athlete receives the guidance and support needed to pursue his individual goals.

"Whether a student hopes to compete at the collegiate level or simply enjoys representing Xaverian as part of a team, he deserves an athletic program that challenges him to reach his full potential and prepares him for success both on and off the field," Currle said.
