A Winning Season for Fine and Performing Arts

Xaverian’s fine and performing arts department has moved from strength to strength over the last eight years. What was once a niche area of study has evolved into a thriving academic level program with more than 300 student performers each year, and participation continues to rise.

Today, nearly one-third of Xaverian students take part in at least one music ensemble. Throughout the spring, their gifts and dedication were on full display. The music program achieved a historic milestone at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA), where the orchestra earned a silver medal, the first instrumental silver in school history. Xaverian choirs also enjoyed an outstanding showing, earning silver and bronze medals, while the concert band received a bronze medal.

Xaverian student musicians continued their success at OrlandoFest over April break. The orchestra and concert band each earned first place in the Double A Division. The combined choir also earned first place and a superior rating in the Double A Division, while the Chamber Choir (aka, Schola Cantorum) took home first place in the Single A Division with a “superior” rating and was named the Grand Champion of the choral division.

The year culminated with the annual spring concert, a celebration of the students’ accomplishments. “The spring concert was a wonderful reflection of the growth, dedication, and creativity of our student musicians,” says Xaverian Principal Dr. Michael Nicholson, P ’29. “It was inspiring to see their hard work come together and to celebrate not only what they have accomplished as musicians, but also the confidence, collaboration, and sense of community they have developed through the arts.”

The visual arts department also celebrated the creativity of its students during the annual Spring Visual Arts Festival. The exhibition featured works from artists across all levels of curriculum, from the Survey of Art students to those enrolled in AP Drawing and AP 2-D and 3-D Art and Design.
