Physical Education and Wellness

Wellness is the state or condition of being in good physical and mental health. This is a movement-based course with an emphasis on activity and learning. The course will provide students with an opportunity to improve their physical fitness levels through various physical activities and team games. Skills will be taught through group and individual activities and include a fitness component. The class is predicated on learning experiences which enable students to gain knowledge, motivation, and competence to adopt a physically active lifestyle for a lifetime. The course enables students to develop physically, morally, intellectually, and socially in an environment where students are valued and are part of a community. Each wellness course will include a classroom component where students will be exposed to age- and grade-appropriate concepts of living a healthy lifestyle.

Objectives
  • Students will be able to demonstrate competence in a number of complex skills, strategies, and rules in different types of movement activities.
  • Students will use principles of training for the purpose of modifying levels of fitness.
  • Students will demonstrate winning and losing in perspective relative to other established goals of participation.
  • Students will demonstrate resolving conflicts in appropriate ways.
  • Students will identify behaviors that are supportive and appropriate for the wellness setting.
  • Students will recognize that physical activity can provide a positive social environment for activities with others.
  • Students will apply safe practices, rules, procedures, and etiquette in all wellness activities.
  • Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for a healthy, physically active, and socially responsible lifestyle.

    Prerequisites: Successful completion of PE & Wellness I

    Description: This course will provide the information, skills, and opportunity for students to work on their own personal fitness goals. Concepts of personal fitness will be explored. Students will be instructed in warm up, flexibility, speed training, cardiovascular conditioning, strength / power training and hypertrophy. 
  • Introduction to Athletic Training-H

    INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETIC TRAINING

    Description: The Introduction to Athletic Training course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, physician, physician assistant, strength and conditioning, and any other sports medicine-related fields. It will be offered as a classroom and lab course to provide students not only with textbook learning but hands-on learning as well. This course will focus on the basic information and skills important in the recognition of care, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Introduction to Exercise Science-A

    INTRODUCTION TO EXERCISE SCIENCE

    Prerequisites: Successful completion of PE & Wellness I

    Description: Through classroom and lab engagement students will become familiar with the concepts relevant to exercise science. Students will learn to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in themselves and research corrections. Students in this course have an interest in a career in fitness such as personal trainer, fitness instructor, wellness teaching, athletic training or coaching.
    Course would be learning based and not designed as time for students to workout. Class time will be split between classroom and “lab” activities where students will assess themselves and classmates. Students will need to be cleared to participate in athletics, as labs will involve movement and cardiovascular assessment. This course will use the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s Optimum Performance Training template. Students will be introduced to fitness related systems of the body. Concepts explored will include, but not limited to: Balance, Endurance, Stabilization, Strength, Power and Hypertrophy. Grades will be based on quizzes, tests and projects.
  • Summer P.E. and Wellness

    SUMMER PE and WELLNESS

    Prerequisites: This course is only for students who are enrolled in Chorus, Band, Orchestra, Introduction to DIY & Programming, AP Chemistry, or AP Biology. 

    Description: This is a movement-based course with an emphasis on activity and learning. The course will provide students with an opportunity to improve their physical fitness levels through various physical activities and team games. Skills will be taught through group and individual activities and include a fitness component. This course also includes a classroom component where students will be exposed to age- and grade-appropriate concepts of living a healthy lifestyle. The class is predicated on learning experiences that enable students to gain knowledge, motivation, and competence to adopt a physically active lifestyle for a lifetime. To register for this course, students must see their school counselor. 

    Schedule: Summer 2025 - The class will be taught over the course of two weeks with 5-hour sessions each day. 
     
    • June   9 - 13 from 8:00 - 1:00
    • June 16 - 20 from 8:00 - 1:00 *No class on Thursday, June 19th in recognition of Juneteenth*
    All classes are in person at Xaverian Brothers High School. Students should report to the Simoni Lobby no later than 8:00 a.m. each day. 

    Given that this is a two-week intensive course, attendance is mandatory at all class sessions for the entire session. Please do not plan to arrive late or leave early on any of the days. 

    Cost:
    $500. Checks can be made payable to “Xaverian Brothers High School” and given to Mrs. Wesalowski in the Student Life Office no later than April 30th.
  • Team Sports-A

    Prerequisites: Successful completion of PE & Wellness 9
     
    Description: This class will provide students with an opportunity to pursue activities that can lead to lifelong recreational and fitness endeavors. New and previously introduced games will be explored, potentially including Ultimate Disk, Flag Football, NitroBall, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Team Handball. Skills, rules, sportsmanship and teamwork will be stressed.
