Expanding Opportunities: Xaverian’s Fine and Performing Arts

A note from Dr. Conca and Dr. Nicholson about new opportunities in the arts

Here at Xaverian, our families know their sons will receive an excellent education rooted in challenging academics, a robust campus ministry program, highly-competitive athletics, and our Xaverian identity. One of the potentially lesser known (but equally important!) aspects of a Xaverian education is our growing fine arts program. As such, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight this vital aspect of Xaverian’s overall educational approach.

First and foremost, congratulations to the four young men who qualified to participate in the competitive Massachusetts All-State Music Festival. Singers Bren Cueco ’23, Joe Cucinotta ’22, and Michael Thekaekara ’24, along with trumpeter Owen Kidd ’22 will perform at Boston Symphony Hall on March 5. Additionally, the High School Choir is traveled to Manchester, NH this earlier this February to sing in two Masses at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. The Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci, Bishop of New Hampshire, will be present. Our Xaverian singers also meet and performed with the Saint Anselm College Choir. Plus, there’s more travel in store for our students next year as our high school chorus and orchestras will head to Orlando, Florida in the spring of 2023 to perform as part of a music festival at Universal Studios. All high school students enrolled in voice or instrument classes next year will be eligible to participate.

Our first ever Visual Arts Spring Exhibition will take place on Wednesday, March 9 in the FXD gym. All are invited to come see student artwork, learn more about the present and future of the visual arts program at Xaverian, and enjoy refreshments from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. We hope to see you there.

Our young men in the theater program (and their female counterparts from area schools) have been working hard to prepare for the opening of Something Rotten!. This comedic musical features impressive tap dancing (yes, our students can tap dance!) and incredible vocals. Save  the date to join us as the curtain rises on the first musical in Xaverian’s theater since the spring of 2019. It’s taking place from March 25-27 and you won’t want to miss it.

As your son gears up to select his courses for the upcoming year, know that there are an impressive 36 options available in the arts, including honors and AP classes. Plus, art electives are now open to students in grade 9, which means that our young men who become passionate about what they’re learning in our middle school program can continue classes uninterrupted straight through high school. In addition, we continue to offer our private lessons as part of our instrumental program. A number of our instructors have ties to Broadway, the Boston Pops, and several collegiate programs including Boston University and Brown University.

Guided by our mission and pursuit of excellence in all we do, we believe our fine arts program is positively contributing to the overall fabric of Xaverian. Simply stated, the arts represent one way we strive to support our young men in order to truly maximize their potential.
