Xaverian Soccer Coach Named D1 South Coach of the Year

The Eastern Mass Coaches Assocation announced the honor this week.

We're excited to announce that Mr. Gary Bowers has been named Eastern Mass Coaches Association Division 1 South Coach of the Year! Bowers has been the varsity soccer coach since 2001 and cumulatively has 29 years of coaching experience at Xaverian. In response to receiving the award, he said, "This is an award the team earns for a coach. Because of the level of respect I have for my peers in the Coaches' Association, their recognition means a lot and is very humbling."

Bowers describes coaching as an extension of teaching, one that affords him with the opportunity to work with student athletes in a different context than the classroom. “I enjoy the tactical side of coaching. Trying to bring team resources to bear in the most effective ways is always a fascinating balance,” he says. “Helping student athletes challenge themselves to go above and beyond and seeing them realize potential they may not have even known they have is always exciting.”

The soccer team finished a fantastic season at 13-4-4. They took it all the way to the D1 South Semi-finals but lost to Brockton in heartbreaking fashion, 1-0 in overtime.
