High School Sports Update 2-26-21

Dear Hawks,

Over the break, our varsity hockey team did something no hockey team at Xaverian had done since 1968! They finished out the regular season with a 3-1 win over Malden Catholic and a 2-1 loss to Catholic Memorial. The win on Friday clinched the Catholic Conference regular season title, earning them the number one seed in the Catholic Conference hockey tournament. This gave them a bye in the first round. In the semi-final round, they faced off with #6 Malden Catholic on Friday, February 19. The Hawks won a defensive game, advancing to Saturday’s championship game against the #4 seeded Catholic Memorial Knights who had beaten Saint John’s High School and St. John’s Prep in the tournament already. Joe Di Martino ’23 tied the game at 1-1 in the first half of play on his third goal of the tournament. With the score tied in the second half of play, CM was awarded a penalty shot. Goalie Kevin McGrath ’21 was up to the challenge and turned away the CM captain with a great save. Braden O’Hara ’22 scored the game-winning goal with around nine minutes to play, and the smaller, socially distanced crowd went wild! The Hawks then played stingy defense led by Shane Spinale ’21 (Captain), Trevor Connolly ’21 (Captain), Andrew Barton ’21, and Aiden Rodriguez ’22. When the final horn sounded, Xaverian completed the sweep of the regular season and tournament championships! As expected, the team was elated. You can see the celebration here. The team received great press in the Boston Herald, Boston Globe, and other local hockey publications. The 2021 Xaverian Hockey team definitely made the most of their opportunities this year, finishing 7-3-2 on the season and winning both the regular season and tournament championships in the Catholic Conference. Congratulations to Head Coach Dave Spinale, P ’21 and his entire staff, and most importantly, all the student athletes who got it done on the ice!

The swim and dive team had one of their best seasons in recent history as well. They finished the season with a 4-1 dual meet record in the Catholic Conference. This was good for second place in the league. They also finished in second place in the virtual league championships. Head Coaches Jim Stallings and Courtland Morse would like to thank everyone for their support this season. They know it was not ideal to wake up so early for those practices, but being able to have a season was worth every minute of it. Thank you to the parents that came out in support and also helped on the deck to allow the boys an opportunity to support each other and focus on their next event. We would especially like to thank Coach Courtland Morse for everything he has done for every swimmer/diver -both past and present - and for his unwavering support of these young men. It has been nothing short of a blessing and he will be greatly missed by all. Coach Morse will step down from coaching after over 20 years of service to the program! Thank you, Coach! We would also like to thank the five seniors for their leadership and contributions to the team: Tim Bowers ’21, Justin Foster ’21, Steven Koertje ’21, Siddarth Mallareddygari ’21, and Michael Scuderi ’21.

The basketball team completed their season with a pair of tough losses to Catholic Memorial and Malden Catholic. Last Tuesday, the team lost on a shot made by CM with 2.2 seconds left on the clock. The final score was 63-62. CM was the regular season Catholic Conference Champions. The Hawks fought hard all year and dealt with countless situations of adversity. The team was led by the following members of the senior class: Ty Murphy ’21, Ryan Douglas ’21, Michael Berluti ’21, Garrett Fish ’21, Thomas Arrigal ’21, Drew Briones ’21, Hunter Follen ’21 and Luke Birch ’21.

Fall II Sports update
Monday marked the start of the season for our winter track and football teams. This season will run through April 24. We are very excited to have great numbers for both programs, and look forward to another successful season for the Hawks. If your son is interested in joining either of these programs, please have him reach out to our head coaches: Dave Palmieri (dpalmieri@xbhs.com) - Winter Track, or Al Fornaro (afornaro@xbhs.com) - Football.

Modifications for these sports due to COVID-19 can be found here. Student athletes that are on campus for in-person learning will have access to locker rooms for storage in the morning and for changing after school in groups of 10. They must bring their own water bottles, masks, towels, etc. There will be a communication going out regarding Xaverian and the Catholic Conference spectator policies for the Fall II season. We look forward to an exciting season on the gridiron and track!
