With a 35-7 victory over the Catholic Memorial Knights, the Xaverian Hawks secured their spot at the Super Bowl. This game was a satisfying victory for Xaverian fans, as they watched their team pull off a 28-point win against a team to which they had previously lost in the regular season, in a 13-12 defensive standoff. However, the Hawks found holes in the CM defense last Friday, with four rushing touchdowns. Xaverian scored early with a rushing touchdown, to which CM followed up by making it down to the 3-yard line, where they fumbled the ball. The Hawks took advantage of the fumble and the forced turnover filled the Hawks with momentum. Not so long after, Hawks’ free safety, Brian Abraham ’18, intercepted a CM pass at the Knights’ seven yard line and took it those seven yards into the end zone for a pick six.

With a 14-0 lead, Mike Masse ’19 and Ike Irabor ’18, looking like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon, ran for forty yard and twenty-eight yard touchdowns respectively. Xaverian rode into the half with a 28-0 lead. In the second half, the Knights finally put some points on the board with a ten yard touchdown pass, but then, with his third rushing touchdown of the game, Ike Irabor ran forty more yards into the end zone. The Hawks took a victory of 35-7 over the Knights.

“We have gotten much better since the last time we played CM,” Coach Fornaro ’78 remarked postgame. “Once the playoffs start, everyone is 0-0.” He credited his team for its hard work and tough play against a strong opponent, as the teams “knew that the game was for the right to play at Gillette.” He also noted that the large margin of victory “had as much to do with field position and opportunity” than anything else, praising the team’s impressive play on both sides of the ball.

Now the Hawk’s are slated to go head to head against Everett at Gillette Stadium this December for the Super Bowl. This is the Hawks’ fifth straight year as Division-1 South champions. In those five years, they have never lost a playoff game.

But more immediate than the Super Bowl is the Thanksgiving Day showdown with St. John’s Prep. Coach Fornaro reminded his team that the game “must be treat[ed] just like all of the others,” saying that, “we must prepare, practice, and play as best we can” in order to raise the Brother Drinan Memorial Trophy. He adamantly kept his focus on the upcoming game, saying that “nothing else matters.” Coach ended his interview with a resolute, “GO HAWKS!”

Xaverian will face the Eagles on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, at 10:30 at the Prep.
