Seniors Win Local Award for Exceptional Community Service

Recognized for their exceptional service to the community, Xaverian seniors Armaan Dhillon, Kenneth Cox, and Evan Wolk comprised three of the ten Norwood youth chosen for the Ten Outstanding Norwood Youth (T.O.N.Y.) awards this month.

Dhillon, an active participant in Xaverian’s X-ACT program, has enjoyed spending time at St. Katharine Drexel in Roxbury and Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy in Mattapan, where he helps students with their homework. He has volunteered at his local food pantry and has devoted a number of years to Bighelp for Education, a non-profit dedicated to educating underprivileged youth in India. This past summer he traveled to India as a Youth Intern, conducting a two-day workshop at a government school in Chandigarh.

What I like the most about serving my community is the tangible impact it has on others. Putting a smile on a young second grader’s face after successfully showing her the easiest way to approach her homework, and helping her complete it diligently is one of my most vivid and heartwarming memories. When serving, any moment can be memorable, and the best part is knowing that I’m able to have a positive influence on somebody else with the seemingly smallest actions,” said Dhillon.

Evan Wolk has invested significant time into the community at Xaverian, volunteering through the student group Young Men 4 Change, and taking an active role as a mentor to younger students as part of Xaverian’s Hawk-to-Hawk program. In his local community, he has spent time volunteering at local food pantries, has participated in memorial services for veterans, and just recently completed a service project for his elementary school, Blessed Sacrament in Walpole, where he built and installed a large sandbox and cover in the preschool playground.

“A lot of people have helped me throughout my life, many of them in the Xaverian community. I'm very grateful for this and it is my honor and duty to try to help others in return,” said Wolk.

Kenneth Cox has played an active role at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Norwood and at Xaverian as a peer minister. In this role at Xaverian, he helps incoming freshmen adjust to Xaverian and become part of the community.

“I think the most important aspect of service to me is its ability to affect people's lives. By giving part of my life to others, I can make a positive impact on other people, which I think is one of the best things we can do for each other. Winning the T.O.N.Y. award is a great honor for me. I've lived in Norwood my entire life, and to be chosen as an outstanding citizen of my town is something I find incredibly exciting.”
