Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools seek to inspire lives of learning, faith, and service.
The years a student spends at a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School will be marked by many things – challenging academics, rewarding opportunities for service, lifelong friendships, the lively camaraderie of athletics, and shared celebrations that strengthen faith. A Xaverian education is rooted in the tradition, mission, and values of the Xaverian Brothers. The values of humility, trust, zeal, compassion, and simplicity are woven into all aspects of life at Xaverian.

It is in the small, seemingly insignificant moments - what Theodore Ryken, founder of the Xaverian Brothers, called “the ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life” - that a Xaverian man distinguishes himself. He is a faith-filled, compassionate, leader, thinker, and difference maker.

  • Beliefs

Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools serve the Catholic Church's educational mission by forming young people to be faith-filled, contemplative leaders who address the evolving needs of our world. Informed by our Xaverian and gospel values, our schools seek to educate the whole student by nurturing each person's unique giftedness. Xaverian students model Christ by utilizing their talents to respect the diversity of God's creation, seek justice, and love their neighbor.
  • History & Traditions

The history of the Congregation of Saint Francis Xavier has shaped the unique character of Xaverian education today. Overcoming adversity, recognizing our own limitations as individuals and the power of enduring relationships, the Xaverian Congregation lives its motto, “in harmony, small things grow.”

The congregation of lay religious brothers was founded in Bruges, Belgium, in 1839 by Theodore James Ryken. The first Xaverian Brothers in America arrived at Louisville, Kentucky in 1854. There, they taught in parish schools, and in 1864, established the first Xaverian secondary school in America, beginning a long and distinguished history of Xaverian education that would quickly expand in the United States and complement the congregation’s work throughout the world.
  • Learning

At the heart of a Xaverian education is our commitment to the full development of each person. We begin with the understanding that each student arrives with a unique set of talents and preferences. Academic offerings and the teaching/learning process are structured to build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to allow students to explore areas of study that engage and excite their individual interests. The Xaverian focus on building enduring relationships allows us to foster outstanding achievement in students with a broad range of abilities.
  • Service

A true sense of community and responsibility for others infuses every aspect of life in a Xaverian school. Every member of the community has something important to contribute to the school’s mission and work. And just as each person must be an active member of the school community, the school itself has an important role to play in the larger world. A Xaverian education helps students develop the attitudes and values essential for a life of Christian service and social consciousness.
  • Each School

Most of the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools trace their origin directly to the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier (Xaverian Brothers) and its mission of evangelization through the ministry of education. Other XBSS schools have come to embrace the Xaverian governance model and mission after a history of association with other religious congregations or dioceses. Each school, however, has its own particular identity, history, and tradition, and incarnates its mission in unique ways.

The 13 schools currently include over 13,000 students and their families, 1,000 faculty, staff, and administrators, and 300 trustees.

The XBSS Sponsorship Office provides services to the schools operating out of a sense of Gospel mission that is reflected in the mission of the Church and of the Xaverian Brothers. The XBSS Office exercises a strategic perspective by providing collaborative, flexible, and futuristic planning, which preserves, protects, and enhances the Xaverian educational tradition while addressing the evolving needs of the sponsored schools. To learn more, visit www.xbss.org.
