This Gift Commemorates His Installation as the 7th Archbishop of Boston

On Wednesday, September 17, The Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, Archbishop of Boston, presided over Xaverian Brothers High School’s annual Mass of the Holy Spirit. He was joined by concelebrants Rev. Wayne Belschner, Rev. Paul Clifford ’82, Rev. John Currie, Rev. Stephen Donohoe, Rev. Matthew Norwood, Very Rev. Bryan Parrish ’80, Rev. Michael Zimmerman ’07, Rev. Paul Wargovich (Master of Ceremonies), and Deacon John Nicholson, GP ’29.

A tradition in Catholic schools for more than 400 years, the Mass of the Holy Spirit marks the beginning of the academic year by offering thanks to God while praying for wisdom, strength, and zeal for the months ahead.

Earlier this year, Archbishop Henning joined Xaverian’s Head of School Dr. Jacob Conca ’94 at a Catholic Schools Week event during which the two reflected on the importance of spiritual leadership, faith, and their mutual affection for football.

At the conclusion of the Mass of the Holy Spirit, Dr. Conca offered his gratitude for Archbishop Henning’s presence in the liturgy and extended an invitation to him to attend the Xaverian vs. St. John’s Prep Thanksgiving football game. He also presented him with a custom #7 Xaverian football jersey, which commemorates Archbishop Henning as the 7th archbishop of the Diocese of Boston.
