Once again, Xaverian Brothers High School has won a D1 State Championship!

On Monday,October 29, a strong team effort at the Chicopee Country Club led the Hawks varsity golf team to glory, as they edged out St. John’s Prep and Lincoln-Sudbury by a 5-stroke margin, 297 to 302. This is the third state championship for the Xaverian golf program in five years. The incredible performance of freshman Joey Lenane was the highlight of the day, as he shot a 70 (one under par) to make him the runner-up for the state’s individual title.

With a 12-4 regular season record, the team was a force to be reckoned with all year. Coached by Gerard Lambert and Tom Horne, the team included Eric Boulger ’21 (co-captain), Christian Brady ’19, Declan Buckley ’20, Trevor Connolly ’21, Joey DeSimone ’19, Spencer Dumas ’22, William “Boomer” Jenks ’20, Joey Lenane ’22, Sean Sullivan ’20, and Quinn Wilson ’19 (co-captain).

Over the long course of the season, the team faced their fair share of challenges, including playing at alternate locations, wet courses, and getting swept by rival schools, but Coach Lambert emphasized that these challenges, “give you an opportunity to see what your team needs to improve on while making you mentally tougher.” He said that the challenges ended up being, “really beneficial for our postseason preparation.”
“We always had a positive attitude,” said senior Christian Brady. “At the end of the day, we all play on the same course in the same conditions, and the biggest advantage that our team had was that we stayed positive and never got discouraged.”

“Most people define you as successful when you win, but this is a shallow definition,” Coach Lambert said. “Success should be an internal measure in which you focus on getting better and keeping your focus. Working to improve your craft across the year is real success. Of course you will accept people’s congratulations if you win, but don’t hang your head if you lose. Learning to be a competitor is a big part of what I’m trying to teach.”

For Quinn Wilson, he learned that valuable lesson and enjoyed a thrilling cap to his senior season. “After playing golf here for four years, I experienced my first playoff this year. Having it come together in my senior season was great; I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to my Hawks golf career,” said Quinn Wilson ’19, team captain.

The effort of freshman standout, Joey Lenane, at the state final wowed everyone in attendance, as he beat out dozens of upperclassmen to become the state’s second-highest scoring golfer. Despite such an impressive individual outing, Lenane credits his teammates for pushing each other to improve. “I think everyone on the team got along well, and everyone plays better when they are having fun.” Lenane will next be appearing at the Doral Publix Junior Golf Tournament in Florida, where the top 14-15 year old golfers from across the country gather to compete for three days at the Trump Doral Miami course.

Congratulations to the team on their fantastic championship season!
